Tips for Success as a New Real Estate Agent

Once you’ve completed the pre-licensing course at Sea Coast Real Estate Academy and passed your licensing exam, you are officially able to assist in real estate transactions. You’re probably wondering “What does it take for a new agent to succeed in today’s shifting real estate market?”  Here are some great tips to follow when you are getting started as a new real estate agent.

Be Motivated, Resilient, and Flexible

You will want to find employment with a local broker as soon as you can.  Working with a broker will give you additional resources as well as experience, help you become associated with a brand, and allow you to work with a company that will stand behind you.  In order to gain employment with a broker, you should be a professional who is a go-getter, able to meet deadlines, and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

As you are getting started, you will realize that working as a real estate agent is much like being your own business owner.  You will need to have business skills, abilities in sales, a communications specialist, and a skilled marketer in order to be successful.  A college degree can be helpful in learning to manage time and to be business savvy but is not mandatory for success.

Be Dependable, Trustworthy, and Organized

Other qualities that you should have would include reliability and good organization skills. You will need to stay organized to stay on track of items for your clients.  You should also be on time to appointments, able to work when you need to work and have a schedule that allows for some flexibility.  A great real estate agent is also a contract master and knows the ins and outs of contracts and can help clients draft a well-written contract.

Jumpstarting Your Career

Here is a short list of items you will need to jumpstart your real estate agent career.  You need: a real estate license, access to the MLS (you pay a monthly subscription), dues for the Board of Realtors, a smartphone and computer, a car, business cards, and signs to put in yards.  This list is small, but remember that you are responsible for the cost of these items.  Your startup fees to get your real estate business going will probably be around $2,000 and the first couple of months may not be as fruitful as you are expecting.

Be Eager To Do More

A good beginner real estate agent will ask for more work when they need it.  There’s no need for you to be sitting around an office, twiddling your thumbs.  You don’t make a salary or hourly wage, so time spent sitting down on the job is time spent not making money.  If you need more to do, be sure to talk to your boss at your brokerage.

Continuing Your Education

Finally, another great thing you can do to ensure your success as a real estate agent is to prepare yourself for future learning. Just because you’ve gotten your license doesn’t make you a know-it-all and certainly doesn’t mean you’ve learned all you can about real estate. Continue taking classes and strive to become a master in your field.  It will benefit you going forward.
