A Day in the Life of a Real Estate Agent

Working within the real estate profession allows agents to enjoy a flexible and challenging career. Although agents may not be required to report into the office for certain office hours, the most successful agents do have a daily routine that they follow. Here’s what a day in the life of a real estate agent looks like.

While there is no typical day within real estate, there are tasks that every successful real estate agent completes each workday. The tasks can be broken down into the following categories:

  • Administrative Duties
  • Marketing & Lead Generation
  • Continuing Education
  • Meetings & Showings

Administrative Duties

As with any professional career, agents have plenty of administrative work to attend to on a daily basis. A successful agent stays on top of their administrative tasks and has an organized system in place. Administrative duties include:

  • Responding to emails and phone calls.
  • Coordinating appointments and showings.
  • Handling real estate documents.
  • Corresponding with a client’s lender.
  • Data entry
  • Creating and pulling reports of monthly, quarterly and annual operations.
  • Researching the market on active, pending & sold listings on the MLS.
  • Writing blog posts and email newsletters.
  • Completing a comparable market analysis.
  • Prepare materials for upcoming open houses.

Marketing & Lead Generation

As a real estate agent you aren’t just selling houses, you are also selling yourself. An agent with a thriving business never eases up on marketing and lead generation. They have an active website, blog & social media presence, they also cultivate traditional forms of marketing as well. Another part of lead generation is staying in touch with existing leads. They have a system for following up with leads and make sure to contact their leads every day.

Continuing Education

All real estate professionals are required to perform a certain number of hours of continuing education each year. Successful agents have a plan for completing these requirements and address it little by little each day. They do not procrastinate and wait until the last minute to get them done. Efficient agents research their continuing education requirements and create a timeline of when and where to complete them.

Meetings & Showings

It goes without saying that most agents have meetings and showings each day in their business. They may be meeting with a prospective client about listing a property or networking with a mortgage lender. All agents also spend time showing homes to clients on a regular basis. Getting out in front of people is a regular facet of being a successful real estate agent.

One of the alluring parts of becoming a real estate agent is the change in environment and tasks to complete each day. While this career does have certain types of tasks that should be tended to each day, there isn’t monotony of doing the same things over and over. It also allows for flexibility in scheduling and hours. Find a Classroom Near You to learn more about a career in real estate.
