10 Essential Tips for Passing Your Real Estate Exam on the First Try

After taking pre-licensing courses, the only thing standing in the way of your real estate license is the state real estate exam. Passing the exam is a monumental achievement for all aspiring real estate professionals. While challenging, it’s entirely possible to pass the exam on your first try. In this article, we will share our top 10 tips to help you pass the real estate exam.

1. Pay Attention During Pre-Licensing Courses

Paying close attention during your pre-licensing courses is an essential first step in passing the real estate exam. Pre-licensing courses are specifically designed to equip aspiring agents with the knowledge they need to successfully enter the real estate industry. These courses are filled with knowledge that you will need in order to correctly answer questions on the state exam, so make sure to pay attention and do your best during pre-licensing courses.

2. Create a Study Routine

Ahead of your exam date, you will need to create a study routine that works for your unique learning style. No matter how you learn best, create a routine and stick with it. Consistency is key when memorizing new material, and your efforts will pay off when you take the real estate exam. Passing the real estate exam is not an easy feat, which is why we recommend setting aside studying time every day to ensure you are as prepared as possible when exam day arrives.

3. Use Flashcards

Flashcards and other memory aids are great tools to help you study for the real estate exam. Flashcards are particularly useful for topics that you aren’t well versed on. Whether you prefer to study with digital resources or physical copies, find a method that works for you and create flashcards that will help you succeed on the state exam. Don’t shy away from making your flashcards challenging. The questions and topics that challenge you are the ones you need to study the most.

4. Brush Up on Vocab

The real estate industry is full of vocabulary that all real estate professionals must understand and be able to use in their careers. As such, you can expect to see this vocabulary on the state exam. Flashcards are a great way to help you brush up on these words and ensure you fully understand their meanings. Studying real estate vocabulary will help you understand the exam questions and enable you to choose the most appropriate answers.

5. Take Practice Exams

Not sure what to expect when it comes to the state exam? You’re in luck, because you can take as many practice exams as you’d like. Taking practice exams is a great way to test your knowledge and gain an understanding of the exam format and types of questions presented. Incorporating practice exams into your studying routine is a great way to build your confidence and lessen anxiety around taking the real exam.

6. Review Pre-Licensing Course Material

Don’t toss the notes from your pre-licensing course just yet! Reviewing this material is another great way to prepare yourself for success on the state exam. Read through your notes and course material ahead of the exam date. Your pre-licensing course material has a plethora of information you will see on the state exam, so review your notes carefully and ask questions if you have them.

7. Utilize Exam Prep Resources

The internet is home to a plethora of exam prep resources, from videos to downloadable study materials to help get you prepared for the exam. At Sea Coast Academy, we’re committed to helping our students succeed, which is why we offer a variety of exam prep resources. We recommend dedicating some of your studying time to reviewing these exam prep resources to ensure you are as prepared as possible to take the real estate exam.

8. Pace Yourself

Once exam day arrives, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. One of our biggest tips is to pace yourself. The real estate exam is timed, and each state has different time requirements for completing the exam. In North Carolina, you have 4 hours to complete the 120-question exam, and while that may seem like plenty of time, it is easy to spend too much time on questions and become rushed. When you go to take the exam, make sure to pace yourself. Don’t spend an excessive amount of time debating answers on questions you are unsure of. Try to answer as many questions as you can before going back to assess the questions that are challenging you. This will ensure you are able to complete the exam within the allotted amount of time.

9. Eliminate Wrong Answers

Another big tip for exam day is to eliminate wrong answers. This simple tip can help save you time and find the correct answer on challenging questions. It’s not uncommon for the state exam to feature very challenging and tricky questions, which is why this strategy can come in handy on exam day.

10. Trust Your Gut

Our final tip is to trust your gut. State real estate exams can be very challenging for even the most prepared individuals. When you inevitably come across a challenging question that you are unsure of, trust your gut when picking an answer. Remember, the exam is timed, so you can’t spend too much time debating the answer to a question. Trust your gut and go with the answer you feel best about.
